Established in the 1860s, Ross is an historic West Coast town located in the Westland District on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. The township lies 20 minutes drive south of Hokitika airport on State Highway 6 and 46 kilometres north-east of Harihari, State Highway 6 passes through Ross on its route from Ruatapu south to Pukekura, Harihari, and further south, the Franz Josef Glacier.
With a population of 297 (2013 census) there is little to suggest that Ross once had a population of over four thousand . Ross was once “The Ballarat of Westland” and the Ross Flat was “the richest piece of alluvial ground in New Zealand”. Ross has many attractions, The West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail start or finishes in Ross, The Water Race walkway, Gold Panning at Jones Creek or the Information Centre.
Hokitika Gorge is located 33 kilometres or a 40 min drive inland from Hokitika. Visitors can easily walk through lush native bush to a rocky gorge with calm turquoise blue water or the impressive swing bridge and the granite rocks of the gorge's walls.
Hokitika or “Hoki” as locals have affectionately named this little town, is idyllically located on a stunning, driftwood-strewn beach on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Presided over by the towering Mount Cook and the Southern Alps this idyllic little town functions primarily as a gateway to the South Westland World Heritage National Park, however, the town itself offers plenty to keep you blissfully engaged. Hokitika is well-known for its excellent local crafts and has developed a prolific artistic community with an array of open studios and galleries displaying skilful artisans in the process of, among other things, weaving, greenstone carving or blowing glass. It's a place of simple pleasures: scout the craft galleries, enjoy the fabulously fresh local seafood, or simply have a relaxing picnic on the banks of the picturesque Lake Kaniere surrounded exquisite snow-capped mountains. Hokitika is a great place to get away from the bustle of the city to engage in some wonderfully relaxing self-indulgence.
Shantytown is a popular tourist destination in the West Coast Region of New Zealand’s South Island. Found just 10 kilometres south of Greymouth, this recreation of a Gold Rush-era town was devised by the Historical and Mechanical Society in 1968 as a way of preserving the heritage of the region, and today is an action-packed facility giving visitors a taste of life in the 19th century. Take a ride on a steam engine train, try your hand at gold panning, explore a period-perfect sawmill, enjoy some Wild West-themed shows at the Hologram Theatre and wander around the village’s vibrant Chinatown district. Short rainforest walks, fun old-time photo shoots and several popular onsite cafes complete the perfect day out with the kids.
Climb aboard one of the world’s most famous train journeys, between Christchurch and Greymouth. Cross the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, and enjoy thrilling vistas over deep gorges as you travel alongside the ice-fed Waimakariri River. Traverse the mighty Southern Alps, where spectacular views of the chiselled alpine landscape will take your breath away at every turn. The tiny township of Punakaiki on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island is primarily used by visitors as a base for exploring the nearby Paparoa National Park. The park is best known for its dramatic blowholes and the distinctive Pancake Rocks. These picturesque limestone formations look curiously like stony stacks of pancakes which funnel blasts of water up to 15 m into the air as the waves crash into the caverns below the rocks. Visitors can explore the sub-tropical rainforests, horse ride along the spectacular coastline, paddle a canoe down the tranquil Pororari River, or climb the remarkable limestone formations for which this area is known. The town itself offers some delightful cafes and restaurants and is home to a small community of quirky local craftspeople including jewellers, carvers, painters and potters. This little town is the perfect place to take some time out between excursions into one of the West Coast's most beautiful and untouched wilderness areas. Note, Punakaiki has no supermarket, no petrol station and limited restaurant facilities.
The Paparoa National Park stretches from the peaks of the Paparoa mountain range to the west coast of the South Island, encompassing spectacular sights and landscapes along the way. The most notable of these are the limestone cliffs, canyons, blow-holes and world-famous 30-million-year-old “pancake-stack” formations. The small settlement of Punakaiki lies within the park and offers visitors the chance to visit heritage sites, take in arts and crafts, and spend some time in the local cafes and restaurants.
The Pancake Rocks are a very popular tourist destination at Dolomite Point south of the main village. The Pancake Rocks are a heavily eroded limestone area where the sea bursts through several vertical blowholes during high tides. Together with the 'pancake'-layering of the limestone (created by immense pressure on alternating hard and soft layers of marine creatures and plant sediments), these form the main attraction of the area.
The Christchurch Botanic Gardens, located in the central city of Christchurch, New Zealand, were founded in 1863 when an English oak was planted to commemorate the solemnisation of the marriage of Prince Albert and Princess Alexandra of Denmark. With more than one and a half million recorded visits each year, the Gardens are one of the city’s most visited public facilities. The Gardens are at the heart of Christchurch’s reputation as the Garden City. A temperate climate supports many thousands of plants, gathered from around the world and across New Zealand since 1863.

The gallery forms an important part of the cultural life of the city and of New Zealand, offering many and varied exhibitions as well as other programs.

I posted feedback and reviews (on Google), but I wanted to send you a personal note to thank you for planning a fantastic trip for our 10 year anniversary! Josh and I had such a fabulous time. All the accommodations and tours were wonderful. Everyone was professional, kind, welcoming, and full of great information. The tips you provided in the itinerary were so helpful for us to plan for the tours and the plan with the driving was a great set up to not over tire us. Every day was fun and full of adventure. We will definitely be recommending you to anyone planning to travel to New Zealand!!
Thanks to you, my family had a wonderful trip to New Zealand over the holidays. We are wishing that there was someone like you living in every part of the world who can help us see other countries just the way we saw yours. We are grateful for the thoughtful process you used to customize a trip that perfectly fit the needs and budget of our family. You've built up an interesting and reliable network of people to meet, places to go and things to do and it was fun to tap into this network as we traveled around both islands. Your connections helped us see New Zealand from the "inside out," so to speak, which is not something we could have managed on our own. So, many thanks to you. You are one in a million!
I cannot thank Michael enough for helping us plan a memorable honeymoon in New Zealand, our trip was flawless and Michael's support throughout was incredible. A true professional, German efficiency delivered in a Kiwi friendly manner! Specifics would be Michael’s organisation skills and dedication to helping us plan our holiday. Michael took numerous skype calls to explain and clarify things and was an incredible guiding hand in helping us decide where we stayed and what we did. During our time in New Zealand, Michael was always on hand to support and deal with any issues to help our holiday run smoothly. Taking a phone call late in the evening to rearrange a trip early the following morning is one case that springs to mind. There are few people I know who would have the dedication to ring you at 7am the following morning to make sure everything is okay! I cannot recommend Michael enough. Anyone who is planning a trip to New Zealand would do well to just sit back and let Michael take care of things. You are in safe, professional hands.
My wife and I highly recommend Michael Nees. We previously used Michael’s services for a trip to New Zealand in 2012, and recently he helped us plan a trip to Australia and New Zealand. We shared cities/regions we wanted to see along with a few activities, and Michael skillfully recommended quality lodging, fun activities, and travel logistics. Travelling to that part of the world from the United States can seem a bit overwhelming planning wise. Michael helps take the stress out of the process however and on both trips we have been very happy with our lodging accommodations and his other suggestions. He also sets up vehicle rentals and can plan domestic flights.
Working with Michael brings you the knowledge of a local. We knew we wanted to visit Far North Queensland for example, but he suggested a small town for us to stay in that ended up far nicer than the town we would have stayed in if we booked on our own, and it was a better jumping off point for visiting the barrier reef and rain forest. Work with Michael and you'll end up with a more enjoyable trip to Australia and/or New Zealand!
We are a family of 4 and just came back from our NZ - Australia holiday organized by Guest New Zealand, which was a fantastic experience. All services, transfers, itinerary and accomodation was spot on. We were given a great price and saw twice as much for a much more competitive price than trips offered by agencies based in the UK. Michael helped us with the itinerary from the begenning accomodating all our requests. During the tours we requested minor changes to fit in with the timings and the adjustments were made imediately, so we felt being properly looked after also during the trip. I can only recommend this agency and would use them again in the future. Thank you Michael!
