The Park for all seasons is New Zealand's finest coastal National Park, located at the top of the South Island and basking under the most sunshine hours in the country, year-round.
A seal colony, a lighthouse and panoramic views of mountains and coastline feature on this spectacular coastal walkway. With the beach close by as well it's a good option for children. It's also one of our best short walks.
The Paparoa National Park stretches from the peaks of the Paparoa mountain range to the west coast of the South Island, encompassing spectacular sights and landscapes along the way. The most notable of these are the limestone cliffs, canyons, blow-holes and world-famous 30-million-year-old “pancake-stack” formations. The small settlement of Punakaiki lies within the park and offers visitors the chance to visit heritage sites, take in arts and crafts, and spend some time in the local cafes and restaurants.
The Pancake Rocks are a very popular tourist destination at Dolomite Point south of the main village. The Pancake Rocks are a heavily eroded limestone area where the sea bursts through several vertical blowholes during high tides. Together with the 'pancake'-layering of the limestone (created by immense pressure on alternating hard and soft layers of marine creatures and plant sediments), these form the main attraction of the area.
Buller canyon Jet was Established in 2004 to provides the quintessential iconic Kiwi jet boating experience in New Zealand. Before the jet boating adventure starts on the Chevy powered V8 River Shark jet boats, guests are advised to walk over New Zealand's longest swingbridge. Built by the gold miners, it’s a massive 110 metres and crosses the mighty Buller River.
The top section is where guests can see the amazing 40,000,000 year old pink granite rock walls that form the shear sides of the canyon. While there, look out for rafters and kayakers amongst the white water as they paddle out of the Ariki whitewater Shute on the mighty Buller River, New Zealand’s favourite water playground.
There is nothing more exciting than big rapids, tight canyons and large rocks and that's exactly what guests get jet boating in the Buller Canyon. Feel the excitement of the big volume water as the jet boat powers its way through the Earthquake rapids where the river was blocked by boulders in the 1929 Murchison earthquake.
It’s difficult to beat Westport’s setting - on South Island’s rugged coast, at the mouth of the Buller River, below New Zealand’s breathtaking Southern Alps, and surrounded by indigenous bush, lakes, and beautiful beaches. Established as a gold mining town in the 1800s, the town has subsequently become a coal mining hub; a legacy that still lasts today and can be explored at the Coaltown Museum. Explore the area’s caves on foot or go rafting on their subterranean waterways, hike through forests or along the shoreline, visit the fur seal colony at Cape Foulwind, or take a day trip to Kahurangi or Paparoa national parks.
Punakaiki Beach Camp offers cabins and powered- and non-powered campsites. The campsites are surrounded by native bush and have incredible views of the impressive limestone cliffs which look down on the camp. All sites include hot showers and use of kitchen facilities. The cabins are dotted around the camp and beds come with a bottom sheet, pillow, and pillowcase. Linen is available for hire.
The communal kitchen has a microwave, toasters, fridge and freezers, stoves, zips for hot water and cleaning utensils for guests use. The dining area has a warm fire for those colder days as well as plenty of indoor and outdoor eating space. A general shop is located in the reception area and offers a wide range of groceries for purchase. Wi-fi vouchers can also be purchased from reception.
Shantytown is a popular tourist destination in the West Coast Region of New Zealand’s South Island. Found just 10 kilometres south of Greymouth, this recreation of a Gold Rush-era town was devised by the Historical and Mechanical Society in 1968 as a way of preserving the heritage of the region, and today is an action-packed facility giving visitors a taste of life in the 19th century. Take a ride on a steam engine train, try your hand at gold panning, explore a period-perfect sawmill, enjoy some Wild West-themed shows at the Hologram Theatre and wander around the village’s vibrant Chinatown district. Short rainforest walks, fun old-time photo shoots and several popular onsite cafes complete the perfect day out with the kids.
Hokitika or “Hoki” as locals have affectionately named this little town, is idyllically located on a stunning, driftwood-strewn beach on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Presided over by the towering Mount Cook and the Southern Alps this idyllic little town functions primarily as a gateway to the South Westland World Heritage National Park, however, the town itself offers plenty to keep you blissfully engaged. Hokitika is well-known for its excellent local crafts and has developed a prolific artistic community with an array of open studios and galleries displaying skilful artisans in the process of, among other things, weaving, greenstone carving or blowing glass. It's a place of simple pleasures: scout the craft galleries, enjoy the fabulously fresh local seafood, or simply have a relaxing picnic on the banks of the picturesque Lake Kaniere surrounded exquisite snow-capped mountains. Hokitika is a great place to get away from the bustle of the city to engage in some wonderfully relaxing self-indulgence.

Lake Matheson is nestled in ancient forest and is famous for mirror views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Its excellent reflecting properties are due to the dark brown colour of the water – the result of organic matter leached from the humus of the forest floor. Dawn and dusk are the best times to enjoy the reflections in the lake. Shorter option: Car park to Jetty Viewpoint. Time: 40 min return car park to jetty. Distance: 1 km return car park to jetty.
Fox Glacier village is in "Glacier Country" on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Tucked discreetly into the rainforest-clad foothills of the Southern Alps, it has a stunning outlook across the surrounding farms and offers breath-taking views of New Zealand’s two highest peaks, Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman. The tiny township was founded from a gold strike which soon petered out, and it now mostly serves as a base for visitors to its massive icy namesake. Compared to its larger, busier neighbour Franz Josef, Fox Glacier exudes a quieter, more intimate atmosphere. But don’t let its sleepy appearance deceive you - there is plenty to thrill even the most enthusiastic adrenalin junkie. Visitors can journey deep into the towering rain forests, explore the blue ice caves of the glaciers, jet-boat up a glacial river, or even skydive! Active adventure, relaxation or family fun all against the backdrop of a spectacular natural landscape, New Zealand’s Fox Glacier offers something for everyone.

Shotover Jet operates on an exclusive area of the Shotover River and is the only company permitted to operate within its spectacular canyons, carved out over the ages by a vast volume of fast flowing water. The very grandeur of this spectacular environment, less than 10 minutes drive from Queenstown, adds to the excitement and exclusivity of the Shotover Jet experience Shotover Jet commenced operations on the upper Shotover River in 1965 and was one of Queenstown’s first adventure activities, and over the years is one of the experiences that has helped to put New Zealand on the global tourism map. Combining the classic New Zealand invention of the Jet Boat with the Kiwi culture of adventure, Shotover Jet has become part of the fabric of what is quintessentially 'New Zealand' and has taken jet boating from its humble beginnings to become one of New Zealand’s most iconic ‘must do’ visitor activities.

Milford sound, New Zealand’s most well-known tourist destination, is not really a sound at all but a fjord as it was created by a succession of glaciers which carved through the rocks as they gouged a track to the sea leaving in their wake the impressive rock formations visible today. Home to some diverse and particularly unusual wildlife including fur seals and crested penguins, as well as bottlenose and dusky dolphins, this geographical gem is a must-see for nature lovers. With the striking Mitre Peak towering over head, sheer rocky cliffs rise vertically out of the calm dark waters while nearby, the waters of the exquisite Bowen Falls plunge down a 520-foot drop before crashing dramatically into the fjord below. With its remarkable geographical setting and its unbelievable abundance of wildlife, it is easy to see why writer Rudyard Kipling once called Milford Sound the “eighth natural wonder of the world.”
Also known as Aoraki National Park, this 700 square kilometre reserve is home to 19 mountains that tower over 3000m, including Australasia’s highest peak – the 3754m high Mt. Aoraki. Not to be missed is the Tasman glacier; at 27km long and 3km wide, this is the country’s largest glacier – though in recent years it has unfortunately been melting fast.

The bus will take you to the Tasman Valley, followed by a 30 minute alpine walk through the moraine and National Park. The terrain is different from the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. The Tasman is gently angled, not steep. The hiking area is wide-open and panoramic, with no risk of falling debris. Most healthy people with ‘street’ level fitness will enjoy the Helihike. Health problems and lack of physical fitness may limit a person’s ability to safely take part on, or complete a Helihike. You land at 1,200 metres above sea level and spend up to 2 hours on this guided interpretative ice trek. The gently undulating terrain is an amazing landscape of fluted ice, runnels, moulins, and sinuous winding streamlets. The helicopter will return you safely to Mt Cook Airport, flying close by the massive 1,000 metre (3,200 feet) Hochstetter Icefall, below Aoraki Mount Cook to finish this amazing adventure.

Day 20Tasman
Trip of a lifetime! Myself, wife and boys age 7 & 9 traveled to New Zealand for 16 Days. Michael planned the perfect trip! I gave Michael the cities and activities I wanted to do and he planned the hotels, logistics, domestic air, all activities that required prior reservations, pick ups and car rentals. He provided detailed itenary and an app with the whole trip spelled out. He was able to place us in an amazing B & B in Rotura (Clover Downs) and an unbelievable B & B with a vineyard (Kinross Cottages) in Queenstown! My family: went to the Auckland Zoo, Cathedral Cove Kayak, Hot Water Beach, Zorbed, Luged, Redwood Tree Wall, Soccer Golf, Paint Ball, Laser Tag, ziplined, retrieved morning eggs and played with sheep at (Clover Downs), Paraglide, Shotover Jet, White Water Rafting, Bungy Jumped, hiked a Glacier, Rode on the Transalpine, swam with the worlds smallest dolphin in the open ocean, played on the worlds largest playground in Christchurch, saw glow worm caves, visited the volcanic valley, relaxed in a natural hot spring river, hiked in old mining caves and visited the Anartic Center! Call Guest NZ now!
We made it back yesterday and all want to say a huge thank you to you for organizing such a totally fantastic vacation. Once we made it to NZ, every single detail went without a hitch, and the directions you gave us made everything super easy. We felt that we had a great selection of things to do and see, but never felt over-scheduled or pressed for time. And of course we had lots of time to be wowed by the people, food and scenery of New Zealand. I think I told you that I've put a ton of posts and photos on my Facebook page, and mentioned how you had helped us out too; you're welcome to check out the posts, and I've already been talking with friends who are also thinking of visiting NZ so that they know to book through you. We're already talking about returning in the future, maybe in a couple of years when the kids can take part in more adventurous activities. We will be sure to give you a call! Many thanks again for an amazing experience.
Thanks to you, my family had a wonderful trip to New Zealand over the holidays. We are wishing that there was someone like you living in every part of the world who can help us see other countries just the way we saw yours. We are grateful for the thoughtful process you used to customize a trip that perfectly fit the needs and budget of our family. You've built up an interesting and reliable network of people to meet, places to go and things to do and it was fun to tap into this network as we traveled around both islands. Your connections helped us see New Zealand from the "inside out," so to speak, which is not something we could have managed on our own. So, many thanks to you. You are one in a million!
