Orakei Korako (also known as 'The Hidden Valley') is a highly active geothermal area situated in the Taupo Volcanic Zone on the Waikato River at Lake Ohakuri, which is part of the hydro-electric power scheme. The formation of the lake raised the Waikato River at Orakei Korako by 18m, flooding more than 250 hot springs and geysers. Even with two thirds of the original geothermal area covered by the artificial lake, Orakei Korako is still New Zealand's largest geyser field and one of the country's must-see natural attractions. Somewhat 'off the beaten track', the Hidden Valley lies nestled in the Taupo Volcanic Zone between Taupo and Rotorua. Orakei Korako is a mere 25 minute drive from Taupo and 45 from Rotorua, and not far from State Highway 1 and State Highway 5.
The Huka Falls are the largest falls on the Waikato River, near Taupo on New Zealand's North Island and it is also the most visited natural attraction in New Zealand. The Waikato river is one of New Zealand's longest rivers and it drains Lake Taupo - the largest freshwater lake in all of Australasia. The name Huka is the Maori word for 'foam', which is appropriate as the falling water and rapids certainly resembles foam, especially under flooding Around 220,000 litres per second of pours over the cliff face, and then rushes under a pedestrian bridge. The water then bursts out of its rapids, over the 11 metre falls, and back into the Waikato River.
Thousands of years in the making and nestled within a natural bush setting, walks through this unique volcanic area take between 30 and 75 minutes. The Lady Knox Geyser erupts daily to heights of up to 20 metres. Features include the world famous Champagne Pool and Primrose Terrace as well as hot springs, steaming ground, expansive vistas and huge volcanic craters. Tongariro is the oldest national park in New Zealand, located in the heart of North Island. It encompasses three active volcanoes – Mount Ngauruhoe, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ruapehu (one of the most active volcanos in the world) – that have great significance to the local Maori people. The raw beauty of the environment draws a high number of tourists, and is also the reason much of the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy was filmed here. There are activities to be enjoyed by everyone here, from scenic cruises to white water-rafting, hiking, rock climbing and skiing in winter.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is most commonly walked from Mangatepopo in the Ruapehu region to Ketetahi Hot Springs, due to the Mangatepopo end being higher in altitude than the Ketetahi Hot Springs end, therefore requiring less climbing. The crossing takes about seven hours of steady walking to complete in good weather, taking longer in winter or if walked from the Ketetahi end.
The crossing is a linear journey, starting on the west side of Mount Tongariro and finishing on the north side. As a result, returning to the western end requires either retracing the entire 19,4 km crossing, or walking 26 km via State Highways 46 and 47 back to the other trail head.
The track begins at the western end near the Mangatepopo Hut with a low gradient until the foot of the steep Tongariro saddle. After the climb to the saddle, the path takes descents and ascents into and back out of two different craters, passing the Emerald Lakes and along the edge of the Blue Lake. The last two hours of the walk involve a long descent down the northern flank of the volcano, passing the Ketetahi Hot Springs.
Mount Ngauruhoe can be climbed as a side trip from the main crossing. In summer the flanks of Mount Ngauruhoe are mostly exposed, loose tephra, lapilli and ash which is very difficult to walk on and requires a considerable energy expenditure compared to walking on solid material.

Michael Nees and Guest New Zealand have planned and booked three trips for us, two to New Zealand and one to Australia. The experience each time was fantastic! The knowledge and professionalism of Michael and his team were very helpful. He does not recommend a B&B or Lodge unless he has stayed there himself. His choices have been fabulous and our hosts were very gracious and helpful. He has recommended the perfect itinerary each trip and his recommended activities or tours have all been interesting, fun and exciting. We highly recommend Guest New Zealand and Michael for a reasonably priced, first class and memorable vacation experience.
Michael truly is the best ! Planned an amazing 20 day trip to Australia and New Zealand and we are just at the tail end heading home soon. Everything was just as he described ! A truly seamless perfect family holiday, tailored to our needs - thanks to Michael ! Don’t hesitate ... just contact Michael and then look forward to the best holiday ever!
Sitting at the airport in Christchurch and reminiscing our last two weeks. It wouldn't have been possible without all your help and effort is planning a perfect holiday. From the best adventures to the best accommodation. We had a fantastic time and would like to thank you for everything. Your country is indeed beautiful. As I would label it. Gods own country. Thank you so so much again Michael and I would referring you to a whole load of friends who have New Zealand on their plans.
