Looping through the Tasman Bay towns of Nelson, Wakefield, Richmond, Motueka and Kaiteriteri, the Great Taste Trail is a terrific way to tour the attractions of this popular holiday destination. Its mix of rural, urban, coastal and riverside scenery is a fabulous feast for the eyes. Natural beauty, however, is only part of the appeal, with this trail serving up a tantalising array of tasty attractions – from art galleries and boutique shopping, to fruit stalls, cafes, craft beer pubs and winery restaurants. Forming a big loop around the Nelson–Tasman region, the trail can be enjoyed in full over several days or dipped into on short hops or day rides. Base yourself in one place or overnight along the way – either way you’re set for a super-sweet sightseeing tour with flavours to suit almost anyone.
Description
This one day cycle adventure takes in some of the most stunning scenery on Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. There are many fun stops along the way with award winning wineries, craft breweries and Pics Peanut Butter World to name a few.
Cycle along the old rail route from Nelson City to Richmond then turn onto the picturesque Coastal Route to Rabbit Island and Mapua. This is all grade one riding (easy) where a moderate fitness level is required. A short ride on the Mapua Ferry has you landing on the Mapua Wharf where the vibe and atmosphere is very relaxing.
This is also a great day out for the whole family.
1 Day - Nelson City to Mapua - Distance: 32kms - Meals: Available along the Trail (own cost)
Your adventure starts at our base in Nelson where you will be fitted to your bikes and briefed on your tour. From here you will start your cycle ride to Mapua on Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. The Nelson Depot opens at 9:00am and your departure time is flexible.
You may choose to explore Nelson City before following the blue Great Taste Trail markers and heading south out to the seaside village of Mapua. Along the way, take in the amazing ‘Classic Car Museum’ then enjoy the atmosphere of the Honest Lawyer, a country style pub. There are also many craft breweries, cafe’s and wineries to sample along the way, or perhaps even a visit to Pics Peanut Butter World.
Continue on the Trail, take the coastal route and enjoy the views from the coastal boardwalks of the Waimea Estuary and fertile farmland (home to a range of internationally significant bird species including the white heron). Cross the spectacular Waimea Swing Bridge then on to Rabbit Island. Take a swim in a freshwater swimming hole or the warm sea waters and sandy beaches of Rabbit Island.
The trail takes you along the main beach of Rabbit Island where you will come to the Ferry landing. A short trip across the channel on the iconic Mapua Ferry lands you at the Mapua Wharf.
Here you can enjoy the buzzing atmosphere of galleries, studios, restaurants, cafes, shops and the Golden Bear Boutique Brewery. We recommend you spend most of the day exploring, then have a relaxing drink at Mapua Wharf before jumping on our shuttle bus at 5.30pm (summer hours), or 4.30pm (winter hours) and returning to Nelson.
Located close to the tip of New Zealand’s South Island, Golden Bay, also known as Mohua, is a shallow bay just northwest of Tasman Bay. It boasts calm waters, cascading waterfalls, pristine beaches, and quaint villages. Sheltering the northern edge of the bay, the protected Farewell Spit - featuring a bird sanctuary and protected wetlands - extends for over 30 kilometres, making it the longest sand spit in New Zealand. Dotting the shores are an array of flourishing villages including the thriving artist’s community of Takaka. The bay is also home to the Pupu Springs, which are the clearest and largest cold water springs in the southern hemisphere. Take the picturesque drive over Taka Hil, sample the tasty, locally-harvested scallops (for which the bay is renowned), and soak up the incredible natural beauty of this magnificent area. Other highlights of the area include Harwoods Hole, the Ngarua Caves, Wharariki Beach, Abel Tasman, and Kahurangi National Parks.
Upper Moutere is situated in the Tasman Region near the northern coast of the South Island of New Zealand. This charming small town makes a popular retreat from Nelson (35 kilometres away), offering a great mix of outdoor attractions and sybaritic delights such as vineyards, gourmet mushroom and strawberry farms, orchards and olive plantations. Key activities include visiting the wineries of Neudorf Vineyards (known for its chardonnays) and Mahana Estates, as well as stopping in at New Zealand’s oldest pub: the Moutere Inn. For those travelling with children, Animal Farm is a highly recommended excursion, with a petting zoo and fun activities like llama walking on offer. Finally, active travellers will find some great walking trails in the surrounding Moutere Hills, which offer views of Mt. Arthur in the distance.
Located in Mapua, New Zealand, Mapua Wharf offers visitors a lovely experience. Mapua Wharf is home to a vibrant collection of restaurants, cafe's, galleries, stores and attractions. Visitors can explore the wharf, enjoy fishing, swimming, and browse or shop at unique stores showcasing local artisans and quality goods. During summer, activities such as wharf jumping and riding the tide are very popular. Other activities include boat cruises and bike riding along trails.
Located in the southern part of Tasman Bay, New Zealand, Rabbit Island is a lovely spot for visitors seeking tranquillity. The island has a long stretch of beach where visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing and lovely walks while taking in spectacular views. Let me start out with thank you!!! It was a trip of a lifetime, we can’t put into words the how amazing the experience was. Your work towards our trip was fantastic and we would be honoured to be listed as a reference for folks looking for a similar journey. You did a wonderful job relating to our needs. We had some really neat pictures of the Koala bears in the Daintree experience, our guide for the day called the outfit after we left and requested they email them to me. We are now home and back to the grindstone. The girls have informed me we definitely need to plan on another trip in similar fashion. Thanks again Mike & Megan and family.
Sitting at the airport in Christchurch and reminiscing our last two weeks. It wouldn't have been possible without all your help and effort is planning a perfect holiday. From the best adventures to the best accommodation. We had a fantastic time and would like to thank you for everything. Your country is indeed beautiful. As I would label it. Gods own country. Thank you so so much again Michael and I would referring you to a whole load of friends who have New Zealand on their plans.
Trip of a lifetime! Myself, wife and boys age 7 & 9 traveled to New Zealand for 16 Days. Michael planned the perfect trip! I gave Michael the cities and activities I wanted to do and he planned the hotels, logistics, domestic air, all activities that required prior reservations, pick ups and car rentals. He provided detailed itenary and an app with the whole trip spelled out. He was able to place us in an amazing B & B in Rotura (Clover Downs) and an unbelievable B & B with a vineyard (Kinross Cottages) in Queenstown! My family: went to the Auckland Zoo, Cathedral Cove Kayak, Hot Water Beach, Zorbed, Luged, Redwood Tree Wall, Soccer Golf, Paint Ball, Laser Tag, ziplined, retrieved morning eggs and played with sheep at (Clover Downs), Paraglide, Shotover Jet, White Water Rafting, Bungy Jumped, hiked a Glacier, Rode on the Transalpine, swam with the worlds smallest dolphin in the open ocean, played on the worlds largest playground in Christchurch, saw glow worm caves, visited the volcanic valley, relaxed in a natural hot spring river, hiked in old mining caves and visited the Anartic Center! Call Guest NZ now!
Thanks to you, my family had a wonderful trip to New Zealand over the holidays. We are wishing that there was someone like you living in every part of the world who can help us see other countries just the way we saw yours. We are grateful for the thoughtful process you used to customize a trip that perfectly fit the needs and budget of our family. You've built up an interesting and reliable network of people to meet, places to go and things to do and it was fun to tap into this network as we traveled around both islands. Your connections helped us see New Zealand from the "inside out," so to speak, which is not something we could have managed on our own. So, many thanks to you. You are one in a million!
I contacted Michael via his website. I was quite apprehensive at first, placing my trust and money in someone unknown in another country to plan a trip for me and my family. Now i look back at our experience with Michael and i cant believe i had a concern at all. He is the ultimate professional, and he goes beyond the call of duty to ensure you have an enjoyable trip. We had a few things not go our way (lost luggage on arrival and some dodgy weather) no fault of Guest of course. Michael went out of his way to re-plan our trip on the spot, giving us advice, checking weather forecasts for us in advance, re-booking when required and keeping us informed whilst we were on the road. I can go on and on but the constant help he gave us was unbelievable. DO NOT PLAN YOUR OWN TRIP, leave it up to the expert...Michael Nees!
