The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is the place where Māori chiefs first signed their accord with the British Crown – the Treaty of Waitangi – Te Tiriti of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document.
The Treaty Grounds feature the historic Treaty House, the magnificently carved meeting house and the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe. Enjoy strolling through one of New Zealand’s great beauty spots with its panoramic views of the Bay of Islands.
The Treaty House was originally known as ‘the Residency’. It is where James Busby conducted much of his official business as the British government’s representative in New Zealand from 1833 to 1840. It was also home for James and his wife Agnes and their six children. The original house was pre-cut in Sydney of Australian hardwood and shipped to New Zealand for assembly on site in 1834. In 1840 it consisted of a parlour, or living room, one large bedroom, a central hall and a small dressing room. A separate building housed the kitchen, store room and servants’ room. Busby added three bedrooms at the back in 1841. The house and its associated farm remained in the family’s possession until 1882, when the estate was sold. Over the next 50 years the house was neglected and became almost derelict. After the Bledisloe purchase in 1932 it underwent major restoration work, first in 1933, when it was named the Treaty House, and again in 1990. Today you can see the original bedroom and parlour as they might have looked in 1840. In other rooms, an exhibition features everyday life in the Busby household, on the farm and around the Bay of Islands in the 1830's and 40's. Other displays tell the story of the gift of the Waitangi estate to the nation and the restoration of the house.

Orakei Korako (also known as 'The Hidden Valley') is a highly active geothermal area situated in the Taupo Volcanic Zone on the Waikato River at Lake Ohakuri, which is part of the hydro-electric power scheme. The formation of the lake raised the Waikato River at Orakei Korako by 18m, flooding more than 250 hot springs and geysers. Even with two thirds of the original geothermal area covered by the artificial lake, Orakei Korako is still New Zealand's largest geyser field and one of the country's must-see natural attractions. Somewhat 'off the beaten track', the Hidden Valley lies nestled in the Taupo Volcanic Zone between Taupo and Rotorua. Orakei Korako is a mere 25 minute drive from Taupo and 45 from Rotorua, and not far from State Highway 1 and State Highway 5.
The Huka Falls are the largest falls on the Waikato River, near Taupo on New Zealand's North Island and it is also the most visited natural attraction in New Zealand. The Waikato river is one of New Zealand's longest rivers and it drains Lake Taupo - the largest freshwater lake in all of Australasia. The name Huka is the Maori word for 'foam', which is appropriate as the falling water and rapids certainly resembles foam, especially under flooding Around 220,000 litres per second of pours over the cliff face, and then rushes under a pedestrian bridge. The water then bursts out of its rapids, over the 11 metre falls, and back into the Waikato River.
Thousands of years in the making and nestled within a natural bush setting, walks through this unique volcanic area take between 30 and 75 minutes. The Lady Knox Geyser erupts daily to heights of up to 20 metres. Features include the world famous Champagne Pool and Primrose Terrace as well as hot springs, steaming ground, expansive vistas and huge volcanic craters. Tongariro is the oldest national park in New Zealand, located in the heart of North Island. It encompasses three active volcanoes – Mount Ngauruhoe, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ruapehu (one of the most active volcanos in the world) – that have great significance to the local Maori people. The raw beauty of the environment draws a high number of tourists, and is also the reason much of the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy was filmed here. There are activities to be enjoyed by everyone here, from scenic cruises to white water-rafting, hiking, rock climbing and skiing in winter.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is most commonly walked from Mangatepopo in the Ruapehu region to Ketetahi Hot Springs, due to the Mangatepopo end being higher in altitude than the Ketetahi Hot Springs end, therefore requiring less climbing. The crossing takes about seven hours of steady walking to complete in good weather, taking longer in winter or if walked from the Ketetahi end.
The crossing is a linear journey, starting on the west side of Mount Tongariro and finishing on the north side. As a result, returning to the western end requires either retracing the entire 19,4 km crossing, or walking 26 km via State Highways 46 and 47 back to the other trail head.
The track begins at the western end near the Mangatepopo Hut with a low gradient until the foot of the steep Tongariro saddle. After the climb to the saddle, the path takes descents and ascents into and back out of two different craters, passing the Emerald Lakes and along the edge of the Blue Lake. The last two hours of the walk involve a long descent down the northern flank of the volcano, passing the Ketetahi Hot Springs.
Mount Ngauruhoe can be climbed as a side trip from the main crossing. In summer the flanks of Mount Ngauruhoe are mostly exposed, loose tephra, lapilli and ash which is very difficult to walk on and requires a considerable energy expenditure compared to walking on solid material.

For a wind down, pop into the Chocolate History Museum or stroll the streets of Napier – the town boasts phenomenal Art Deco architecture.

To the building of Napier as the Art Deco city of the world. Included in the tour, is a look through New Zealand's second oldest club, one of the few buildings that survived the earthquake. In the air above, the amazing birds with their six foot wing span swoop and dive as they bring back fish. On the ground, just a few feet away, the pairs preen and perform the dance of the gannets’ recognition ritual. The birds can be seen from September to early April. In September they return from their winter escape to build their nests ready for the arrival of the chicks during December and January. The chicks are then fattened up and made ready for their first and departing flight in late April when they go off on their annual ritual to warmer climates.

Hi Michael – Thanks for asking for additional feedback on our trip. In short, we had a great time. New Zealand was even more spectacular than we imagined and the itinerary you put together really gave us an opportunity to see so much and encourage us to come back for a longer stay. All told though we thought the trip was incredibly well organized and easy to execute. We never had an issue with anything on the itinerary and loved getting your suggestions for where to stop along our drives. The app made it super easy to stay on track and took much of the guesswork out of the trip. We can’t thank you enough for helping to make this such a memorable trip. We’re looking forward to a return visit soon.
I cannot thank Michael enough for helping us plan a memorable honeymoon in New Zealand, our trip was flawless and Michael's support throughout was incredible. A true professional, German efficiency delivered in a Kiwi friendly manner! Specifics would be Michael’s organisation skills and dedication to helping us plan our holiday. Michael took numerous skype calls to explain and clarify things and was an incredible guiding hand in helping us decide where we stayed and what we did. During our time in New Zealand, Michael was always on hand to support and deal with any issues to help our holiday run smoothly. Taking a phone call late in the evening to rearrange a trip early the following morning is one case that springs to mind. There are few people I know who would have the dedication to ring you at 7am the following morning to make sure everything is okay! I cannot recommend Michael enough. Anyone who is planning a trip to New Zealand would do well to just sit back and let Michael take care of things. You are in safe, professional hands.
Michael Nees and Guest New Zealand have planned and booked three trips for us, two to New Zealand and one to Australia. The experience each time was fantastic! The knowledge and professionalism of Michael and his team were very helpful. He does not recommend a B&B or Lodge unless he has stayed there himself. His choices have been fabulous and our hosts were very gracious and helpful. He has recommended the perfect itinerary each trip and his recommended activities or tours have all been interesting, fun and exciting. We highly recommend Guest New Zealand and Michael for a reasonably priced, first class and memorable vacation experience.
